Hormone Replacement (HRT for short) is used to increase the levels of Estrogen in your body. Women go through the menopause when the ovaries stop producing Estrogen. As a result of this, in the short term, women will experience symptoms such as hot flushes, headaches, excessive tiredness, depression, joint pains, night sweats etc. However, it is the intermediate symptoms that tend to cause many problems and these arise a few years after the menopause: painful intercourse, loss of libido, dry vagina, urinary problems such as poor bladder control.
The long term effects are osteoporosis (which is having brittle bones) and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks.
The main aim, therefore, of having Hormone Replacement Therapy is to restore the missing Estrogen in the body so that these adverse effects are reversed. That said, even if you are on HRT, you must bear in mind that Estrogen replacement won't keep the ravages of growing old at bay however, it will have some effect on the changes which have been bought about as a result of the menopause.
When the lost Estrogen is replaced, many of the symptoms which occur as a result of the menopause are treated and woman can continue to have pretty much the same quality of health that they had pre-menopause.
How HRT helps alleviate some of the symptoms of the menopause:
Night sweats and hot flushes - HRT is very effective at stopping these. In fact, sometimes the improvement can be seen in a matter of days of starting the treatment.
Problems during intercourse - the tissues making up the vagina and vulva are quite sensitive to Estrogen and when Estrogen levels start to fall dramatically these tissues tend to become dry and thin which makes having sexual intercourse quite painful. Estrogen creams are recommended to be used for a couple of weeks and then repeated as necessary.
Headaches - the effect of HRT on headaches is not easy to guess. In some cases HRT can help with migraine headaches and in others it can actually aggravate the situation. If you find that taking HRT is causing your migraines to become noticeably worse then you should change the dosage or try a different type of HRT treatment until you find one that helps alleviate your migraine symptoms.
Joint and muscle pain - HRT has been known to help with joint problems particularly in the joints of the shoulders, elbows, hands and wrist.
Skin and hair - After the age of 40 or thereabouts, the skin starts to quickly become thinner. Part of this is due to the ageing process but the lack of Estrogen also has a bearing on this. HRT can help to lessen the thinning that is caused by the lack of Estrogen. Many women also find that the texture and condition of their hair also changes and that their hair starts to thin after menopause. HRT can help to improve hair texture.
